Adventure column

Hi folks,

I've updated all my articles from Page 6 and sent them to Paul. This includes all the Adventure columns and Adventure articles from issues 9 to 41 and a few other articles from issues 4 to 25.

I've corrected all the typos, reformatted all the Adventure hints (so they're a bit easier to read) and replaced most of the images. I added a splash of colour to some of them. It was very time consuming, but fun. I just hope Paul sees the light and converts the site to standards-compliant XHTML and CSS to make everyone's life a lot easier. I could have done the work in a fraction of the time.

I found the original GEM files of the Adventure maps for The Dark Crystal and Escape from Traam, converted them to Adobe Illustrator format using Corel Draw, then imported them into Macromedia Freehand to fix the botchy conversion. I then imported them into Macromedia Fireworks, spiffied them up a bit and exported them to GIFs. Whew! The end result was much better than a grainy black and white scan, so it was worth the effort.

This was a real nostalgia trip. I remembered my program listings (Grab An Apple, Colour Palette and Speed Check), but there were many Adventures that I can't even remember playing! It was a real joy to reread the articles. I hope everyone else enjoys them as well.

Hi Garry,

I am glad to hear from the author of those excellent articles. As I read online Page 6 magazine articles I also checked your contributions to the magazine. Did you actually ended those adventure games by yourself?

Did I finish all those games myself? What do you think?

If you've read all my adventure columns, you'll know that I did indeed finish all the games, unless I said otherwise. From memory, Powerstar was the only one that I hadn't finished when I wrote the article. I would try to finish the games myself. When I got stuck, I'd ask around for hints. Our users' group had a small Adventure Special Interest Group and we would all help one another when needed. But we had very strong moral code and we would never give a solution, as that spoils the fun. We would occasionally have an Adventure weekend, where we would play a number of Adventures as a group effort - usually new releases or games that someone else was already having trouble with. These were great fun!

But there would come a time when you just couldn't finish a game - usually because of poorly written software. In these cases, it was anything goes. Out came the hint books and magazine articles and anything else you could find. Scorpia's column in Computer Gaming World was a good one.

The single most important tool in any Adventurer's arsenal was the disk editor! There was many a game that I would never have finished without hacking the source code or searching the disk for the vocabulary or the text strings. I probably spent as much time hacking the games as I did playing them, drawing the maps and writing the articles.
